The Grotte de la Cocalière

Straddling the Gard and Ardèche departments near the village of Courry, the Grotte de la Cocalière is one of the region's best-known show caves. Formed roughly 35 million years ago, it holds a network of galleries stretching more than 14.5 km, of which just over a kilometre has been fitted out and lit for visitors since 1967. Inside, a profusion of limestone formations awaits, from the finest draperies to towering columns, earning it the nickname "the diamond cave." About 20 minutes' drive from Les Cabritas, it makes a perfect escape from the summer heat, whatever the season.

Grotte de la Cocalière

A site explored since the 19th century

The Cocalière cave didn't give up its secrets all at once. Its earliest exploration dates back to the mid-19th century, notably through the work of naturalist Jules de Malbos, who described it as early as 1854. It wasn't until the 20th century, however, with research carried out by speleologist Christian Bouquet from 1952 onward, that the true scale of the underground network was revealed. Traces of human occupation found on site, spanning from the Mousterian period around 45,000 years ago to the Iron Age, show that people came here over tens of thousands of years.

A natural site turned into the Gard's most-visited attraction

Opened to the public in 1967, the Grotte de la Cocalière now welcomes more than 120,000 visitors a year, making it the most-visited natural site in the Gard department. The guided tour winds through the cave at a constant 14°C year-round, past a succession of chambers adorned with crystal-clear rimstone pools, calcite "cave pearls" and delicate translucent draperies. The route is fitted out and secured, suitable for families with young children as well as anyone curious about geology.

Good to know before your visit

The constant 14°C temperature means a jumper or light jacket is a good idea even in midsummer. The guided tour generally lasts a little over an hour, and booking ahead is recommended in high season. From Les Cabritas in Saint-Alban-Auriolles, allow about 20 minutes' drive to reach the cave, making it easy to pair with a walk in the Bois de Païolive or a visit to Les Vans.
