Bois de Païolive

A twenty-minute drive from Les Cabritas Sud-Ardèche, Bois de Païolive is one of the most surprising natural sites in South Ardèche. This holm oak forest, spreading over about 16 km² between Les Vans, Banne and Berrias-et-Casteljau, grows amid an extraordinary chaos of limestone rocks sculpted by erosion over millions of years. Deep fissures, natural arches and oddly shaped boulders — including the famous Bear and Lion rocks — give this stone maze the feel of a fantastical setting, long linked in local legend to the "fadas," the region's fairies.

Bois de Païolive

A forest born from the sea

The limestone of Bois de Païolive formed around 150 million years ago, when the region lay beneath a warm, shallow sea. The accumulated sedimentary layers were later uplifted, fractured and carved by erosion and by the Chassezac river, which cut spectacular gorges along the edge of the site. Rainwater seeping into the cracks of the limestone gradually sculpted a landscape of lapiaz grooves, fissures and isolated boulders, creating this unique karst scenery where the forest seems to grow straight out of the rock.

The Bear, the Lion, and the discovery trails

Several waymarked trails let you explore Bois de Païolive, from the short loop around the Bear and Lion rocks — two striking boulders that appear to face off — to the longer Corniche circuit overlooking the Chassezac gorges. The forest is also home to remarkable wildlife, with a rich diversity of insects, birds and reptiles, making it a recognised site of ecological interest. It's an ideal spot for a cool family walk, especially welcome on hot days thanks to the forest's shade.

Good to know before your visit

Allow about 20 minutes' drive from Les Cabritas Sud-Ardèche to reach Bois de Païolive, on the Les Vans side. Waymarking becomes sparser on the secondary paths, so it's best to stick to a known route (the Bear and Lion rocks or the Corniche circuit) and bring a map or hiking app so as not to get lost in this maze of rocks. Wear sturdy shoes, as the limestone ground is uneven and can be slippery, and carry water — the forest's shade doesn't take the edge off summer heat.
