A former volcano rising to 1,551 metres on the Ardèche plateau, Mont Gerbier de Jonc is one of the most iconic natural sites in the region. At its foot, the source of the Loire rises, the longest river in France. Listed as a protected natural site since 1933, it's now the second most visited tourist site in Ardèche, located in the commune of Saint-Martial, about an hour to an hour ten from Les Cabritas.
The birthplace of France's longest river
At the foot of the Gerbier de Jonc lie several springs considered to be the origin of the Loire: the geographic source, the authentic source and the true source, which converge to form the wild river known further downstream. An easy, signposted trail of about 3 kilometres, taking roughly an hour and a half, lets you discover these different springs on a family-friendly walk.
Climbing to the summit
More energetic visitors can climb to the summit of the Gerbier in about twenty minutes via a signposted trail, to enjoy a 360° panorama over the Ardèche plateau, the Vivarais mountains and, on a clear day, the surrounding peaks. The site is especially lovely in spring and summer, when the surrounding pastures are dotted with wildflowers. Allow a good half-day to combine the climb with exploring the source of the Loire.
Good to know before you visit
The altitude and exposure of the Ardèche plateau mean the climate can be cool and windy even in summer: it's worth bringing a light jumper and sturdy walking shoes, as the summit trail is rocky in places. A paid car park in season and a few local shops (local goat's cheese, souvenirs) can be found at the foot of the site. The road between Flaviac and the Gerbier de Jonc crosses beautiful mid-mountain scenery, a great excuse for a few photo stops along the way, particularly around the Vivarais plateau. Local farmers nearby often sell goat's cheese and artisanal cold cuts directly, a lovely way to extend your discovery of Ardèche's local produce after your walk.
