Sitting between Avignon and Valence, Montélimar is famous the world over for its nougat. About 45 minutes from Les Cabritas, it's also a pleasant gateway to the Drôme provençale.
The Château des Adhémar, a Romanesque Provençal gem
Perched above the town and reachable in a few minutes' walk from the centre, the Château des Adhémar, built in the 12th century, is a fine example of Romanesque Provençal architecture. It now houses a contemporary art centre with a strong regional reputation.
The town of nougat
Several artisan workshops keep the nougat-making tradition alive right in the town centre, some offering free tours of their production, notably along the famous Provençal avenues. It's a chance to discover local know-how and take home a few treats.
Good to know before you visit
The fully pedestrian historic and shopping centre is easy to spot by its sun-toned façades: the Maison Diane de Poitiers, Hôtel du Puy Montbrun, Hôtel de Chabrillan, the Sainte-Croix collegiate church and the Porte Saint-Martin are all worth a look. On Saturday mornings, a lively market fills the Place des Clercs, surrounded by its arcades and cafés.
