Just steps from Les Cabritas Sud-Ardèche, in the commune of Saint-Alban-Auriolles, Mas Daudet occupies the former Mas de la Vignasse, a farm that had belonged to writer Alphonse Daudet's maternal family since the 17th century. He wasn't born here, but it was on this Ardèche farm that young Alphonse spent part of his summers until the age of nine — stays that left a lasting mark on his childhood imagination and fed some of his writing. Now a museum and family park, the farm brings 19th-century rural Ardèche life back to life.
An Ardèche farm in the Daudet family
Alphonse Daudet's mother, Adeline Reynaud, came from Ardèche, and her family had owned this farm since 1645. Although the writer was born in Nîmes, he spent several childhood summers at the Mas de la Vignasse, surrounded by vines, olive trees and mulberry trees grown to feed silkworms. The museum's rooms today display manuscripts, family portraits and personal belongings that shed light on this lesser-known side of the author's life, far from the Provençal image of the Fontvieille windmill usually associated with his work.
Silk farm, gardens and family park
The farm recreates everyday life on a 19th-century Ardèche estate: distilling, blacksmithing, olive pressing, chestnut shelling... and above all a working silk farm, where you can follow the complete life cycle of the silkworm, from egg to cocoon, an activity that once sustained the whole valley. The grounds, planted with a fig garden and crossed by discovery trails, also include play areas for children, making it a popular family outing even for visitors unfamiliar with Daudet's work.
Good to know before your visit
Mas Daudet is just steps from Les Cabritas Sud-Ardèche, in the commune of Saint-Alban-Auriolles — only a few minutes on foot or by car. The museum is generally open from spring through autumn, with reduced hours outside the summer season, so it's worth checking opening days and times before setting off. Guided tours run on certain days in summer, and a footpath links the farm's park to the neighbouring village of Labeaume.
