Grotte de la Madeleine, an Underground Gem in the Ardèche Gorges

Tucked away in the heart of the Ardèche Gorges, about 42 minutes' drive from Les Cabritas, the Grotte de la Madeleine was discovered by chance in 1887 by a young shepherd, Germain Rigaud, who had gone looking for a stray goat. Opened to the public in 1969 after a tunnel was cut linking its two natural cavities, it is now rated three stars in the Michelin Guide. The guided tour, enhanced with a sound-and-light show, leads through vast chambers adorned with concretions of striking shapes and colours.

Grotte de la Madeleine

A discovery worthy of an adventure novel

The cave's story starts like a local legend: searching for his goat by candlelight alone, young Germain Rigaud, nicknamed "le filleul", stumbled upon a vast underground network. It took the methodical exploration of speleologists such as Robert de Joly in 1936, then Abbé André Glory and Jean Trébuchon in the 1950s, to map nearly four kilometres of galleries. After a first modest opening in 1952, the cave officially welcomed the public on 10 August 1969.

Spectacular concretions and a breathtaking panorama

The guided tour descends 65 metres underground, through vast chambers where stalactites, stalagmites, draperies and columns form a mineral décor sculpted over millennia. On the way out, a discovery trail leads to the Belvédère de la Cathédrale, a dizzying viewpoint over the Cirque de la Madeleine and the gorges' white cliffs — one of the most photographed panoramas in the region.
