The Drôme provençale: Nyons and Buis-les-Baronnies

About 1h10 from Les Cabritas, the Baronnies region, between the foothills of the Préalpes and Mont Ventoux, feels like Provence despite belonging to the Drôme. Nyons and Buis-les-Baronnies are its two must-see stops.

The Drôme provençale: Nyons and Buis-les-Baronnies

Nyons, the olive capital

Nyons is renowned for its Romanesque bridge and its olive groves: this is where the famous Nyons black olive grows, a protected designation of origin from the Tanche variety, yielding a mild, fragrant oil. Olive mills, colourful markets and sunlit lanes make up the town's distinctly Provençal atmosphere.

Buis-les-Baronnies, a medieval market and the scent of lime blossom

A little further on, Buis-les-Baronnies charms visitors with its picturesque character and rich historic heritage: the 14th-century arcaded market square, the Dominican convent, the old Romanesque bridge over the Ouvèze, an olive oil mill and a scented garden. Since the 19th century, the village's speciality has been lime blossom, alongside thyme, sage, savory and lavender grown by local producers.

Good to know before you visit

Time your visit for market days to fully enjoy the Provençal atmosphere. The road through the region, winding between olive groves and lavender fields, is worth the detour on its own, with plenty of spots for photos. The area is also very popular for cycling, hiking and paragliding.
