Built along the route of a former local railway line abandoned in 1968, the Dolce Via is one of the finest greenways in Ardèche. Its flat, safe surface makes it accessible to everyone, from families with children to more seasoned cyclists. The entry points to the Eyrieux valley are about twenty minutes from Les Cabritas in Flaviac.
An old railway turned greenway
The Dolce Via follows the route of the former Eyrieux valley railway line, whose viaducts and tunnels have been carefully restored for cyclists and pedestrians. Depending on the section covered, the full route links Saint-Laurent-du-Pape to Saint-Agrève and Lamastre via Le Cheylard, over nearly 90 kilometres. Of course, you can also just cover part of it, depending on your mood and the time you have.
Varied scenery along the water
The route follows the Eyrieux river and crosses ever-changing landscapes: lush forests, picturesque villages, and spectacular former railway structures overlooking the gorges. The Dolce Via also connects to the ViaRhôna, the major cycle route running alongside the Rhône, allowing you to create a fully secured, complete loop. Numerous bike rental shops, including electric bikes, mean you can enjoy the greenway without bringing your own equipment.
Good to know before you go
The surface, mostly compacted gravel or tarmac depending on the section, suits road bikes and hybrid bikes alike, as well as all-terrain pushchairs on the smoothest stretches. Several picnic areas and water points are dotted along the route, particularly near the old converted stations. From Les Cabritas, the closest access point is around Saint-Laurent-du-Pape or La Voulte-sur-Rhône, about twenty minutes by car, so you can choose the section best suited to your level and easily return by the end of the day.
