Alba-la-Romaine, Ancient Gallo-Roman Capital of the Helvii

About 42 minutes' drive from Les Cabritas, Alba-la-Romaine sits on the site of Alba Helviorum, capital of the Gallic Helvii people, founded around the turn of the Common Era. The present-day village, built in part over the ancient remains, stands out for its houses alternating ochre limestone and black volcanic basalt, a legacy of the lava flows that shaped the surrounding plateau. A Roman theatre, a medieval château and an archaeology museum make it a stop as rich in Roman history as in Provençal charm.

Alba-la-Romaine

Alba Helviorum, a forgotten Roman city rediscovered

Founded as the administrative capital of the Helvii, Alba Helviorum acquired within a few decades a forum, baths, temples and a Roman theatre that could seat around 3,000 spectators — a striking sign of this provincial city's urban ambition. The town gradually declined from the 3rd century onward, likely weakened by invasions and the crisis of the Roman Empire, before being slowly abandoned. Archaeological digs carried out over several decades keep bringing this rich past to light, now presented at the MuséAl museum.

A charming village of ochre and black stone

Around the château, whose earliest structures date to the 11th century and which was reworked up until the Renaissance, the medieval village grew up using its own local materials: ochre limestone and black basalt from the plateau's ancient volcanoes. This colour contrast, unique in the Ardèche, gives the village's façades an instantly recognisable character, best discovered by wandering the lanes before or after visiting the ancient site.
